Exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Great Wave (off Kanagawa) (Japanese: 神奈川沖浪裏, Hepburn: Kanagawa-oki Nami Ura, literally “Under the Wave off Kanagawa”), also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, is originally a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai.
Published sometime between 1829 and 1833 in the late Edo period of Japan, the image depicts an enormous wave threatening three boats off the coast in the Sagami Bay (Kanagawa Prefecture) while Mount Fuji rises in the background. Sometimes assumed to be a tsunami, the wave is more likely to be a dangerously large rogue wave.
This was the first print in Hokusai’s series “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”, a quite unique and inspiring collection. Ukiyo-e is the creative painting technique that this belongs to, an art movement that spread widely in the Japan of the XVII, XVIII and XIX centuries. Read more about it here.
It could be said that Hokusai The Great Wave poster is one of the most famous wall decorations ever.
