Pack of 3 fridge magnets representing Soviet Russian Avantgarde monuments, including Tatlin’s Tower, and Ladovsky and Melnikov’s Competition Entries for the Memorial of Christopher Columbus, all designed in between the 1920s and 1930s

Vladimir Tatlin, Nikolai Ladovsky, and Konstantin Melnikov were, in different measures but on the same field of architecture, artists who worked and executed ahead of their time.

The works here depicted were all presented for an open architecture competition called the Columbus Memorial of 1929, which sought the perfect design to be transformed into a real life building in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic’s capital city. You can read more about this event and see other proposed designs by clicking in here.

1929 was the year in which the famous Mies Barcelona Pavilion was built. For Santo Domingo, it marked its 431st year of existence after being founded by Bartholomew Columbus (Cristopher Columbus’ brother) in 1498. Santo Domingo is the oldest city in America estabished by Europeans.
